Sensory-Friendly A Christmas Carol—Making a Holiday Classic Accessible for All

Goodman Theatre is excited to announce our first sensory-friendly performance in our 40th anniversary celebration of A Christmas Carol, Saturday, December 30 at 2pm.

Sensory-Friendly/Relaxed performances are designed to create a performing arts experience that is intended for families with members who have autism or other social, cognitive and physical challenges that create sensory sensitivities. You can learn even more about the performance and purchase tickets (using code SENSORY) at GoodmanTheatre.org/SensoryPerformance.

  1. WHAT IS A SENSORY-FRIENDLY PERFORMANCE?

A sensory-friendly performance is designed to create a safe and welcoming theater experience for patrons who are autistic or have other disabilities that may require sensory sensitivities.

  2. WHAT KIND OF CHANGES WILL BE MADE TO THE PRODUCTION?

    • Lower sound level, especially for startling or jarring sounds
    • Reduction of strobe lights
    • Lights in the theatre will remain at a low level during the performance
    • Patrons are free to talk or leaving during the performance
    • Designated Quiet Areas if patrons need a break from the performance
  3. WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS PERFORMANCE?

The sensory-friendly performance is specially designed for children and adults with sensory-input disorder, autism or other developmental or cognitive disabilities, as well as their families and caretakers. We promise a judgement-free and fun experience for the entire family. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

All individuals are welcome, but all ticket buyers should be aware of the alterations mentioned above.

  4. CAN I BRING FIDGET TOYS OR HEADPHONES INTO THE THEATRE?

Of course! We want you and your family to be comfortable. Feel free to bring your fidgets, seat cushions, blankets and headphones into the theatre. Our theatre tends to feel chilly, so we recommend dressing comfortably.

  5. CAN I LEAVE THE THEATRE DURING THE PERFORMANCE AND BE RE-SEATED?

Yes! Upon leaving the theatre, an usher will direct you to the restroom or a designated Quiet Area. With the help of an user, you can be re-seated throughout the performance.

  6. DOES THE THEATRE HAVE FOOD AND DRINKS?

Yes! The theatre bar sells small snacks and drinks. You are welcome to bring your own snacks, but please limit them to the lobby and do not bring them inside the theatre.

  7. HOW LONG IS THE PERFORMANCE?

A Christmas Carol is 2 hours and 15 minutes long, which includes a 15 minute intermission.

  8. WHAT IS THE IDEAL AGE FOR A CHILD ATTENDING A CHRISTMAS CAROL?

We typically recommend A Christmas Carol for ages 6 and up. Of course, it really depends upon your child. There are scenes in the production that can be spooky! We do not allow babes in arms in the theatre, however.

  9. HOW DO I PURCHASE TICKETS?

Tickets are available through our website (using promo code SENSORY) at GoodmanTheatre.org/SensoryPerformance, or by calling our Box Office at (312) 443-3800. If you have any specific questions or seating needs, we recommend that you call our Box Office so they can assist you.
